A . M. CASSANDRE (ADOLPHE MOURON, 1901-1968) [HERMÈS SILK SCARVES.] Two scarves, pink and yellow. 1951.
34x34 inches, 86x86 cm.
Condition A. Silk.
That Cassandre's work transcended the world of graphic art and became more fully integrated into other aspects of everyday life became fact in 1947, when Hermès commissioned him to design a deck of playing cards. Four years later Hermès asked him to create a design for their world-famous silk scarves. Produced using at least five different colors, the design of a structure amidst clouds, is an elaborate, Escher-esque architectural construction with a sophisticated play on perspective. Reproduced by Hermès in 1991, these scarves remain one of the company's classic designs. Cassandre / Suntory p. 107.
